Every year around the middle of August, September issues and fall catalogs begin to cast shadows on sun-drenched, lazy afternoons and each of us embraces the emergence of this new season differently. Some of us dig our heels in and flaunt white way past its expiration date (let’s face it, only runway models can really pull off the whole winter white thing), while others pounce on any inkling that Chanel’s new fall red lipstick has arrived at Saks. Some dig up the ol’ holiday station on Pandora and croon White Christmas with Bing Crosby or wear flip-flops in freezing temps. However you deal with the changing tides, fall marks new beginnings and a time when you can reinvent your style. So, crank up the air conditioning, pull on a pair of sweats and your favorite hoodie and create your fall theme.

Staple item

Princess Kate has set the blazer trend for fall – designer Smythe has renamed its navy blazer “The Duchess.” Worn at the London Olympics equestrian event, Middleton’s navy Smythe Blazer (created by Toronto-based designer duo, Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe) looked très chic. The cotton blazer features a distinctive cutout on the back, peaked lapels, welt pockets and a front coin pocket, as well as the one-button closure. Pair this fall staple with a white tee or oxford, straight-legged, dark-washed jeans and red ballet flats for tooling around town or debut it over a camel-colored dress at an early fall lunch.

These boots were made for walking

Rain or shine, the Hunter Boot Two-Tone Riding Rain Boot in dark olive and chocolate is the epitome of autumn. The famously dependable Hunter style now in a chic riding silhouette and two-tone color scheme. Quick-dry mesh lining. If you’re feeling a little cray-cray and going for a hint of librarian-with-a-side-of-wild, check out the Jimmy Choo Corinna Floral-Embroidered Suede Boot. The ornate floral embroidery and full lace-up front will give you just enough boho chic you’re craving.

Laid-back days aren’t only reserved for summer

Just because the weather has tapered off doesn’t mean that you have to be buttoned up 24/7. J. Crew’s Perfect shirt in stripe Thomas Mason® fabric is a style on loan from your boyfriend’s closet featuring a two-ply cotton fabric that gives a fabulous tailored, classic fit without feeling too-uptight-at-the-office. Wear it with a slimming pencil skirt or with your favorite jeans. And, create an additional buzz from you fellow fashion junkies – get your initials monogrammed on the cuff in a vibrant color (we like Canary or Red). The Vince Shrunken Turtleneck is a comfy, knit turtleneck sweater designed with a slightly shrunken fit and boxy silhouette that exudes trendy chic. Wear with lululemon Wunder Under Pant *Brushed, a classic lulu legging that is lined with brushed luon which is baby-blanket soft and toasty warm all winter long (these leggings only come out when the weather is chilly – check in with lululemon online or a store in your neighborhood for availability). To complete this carefree style, team with fall’s organic, messy hair trend (buns, waves, braids).

Color scheme

Pantone’s fall color palette includes rich tones that are translated into beautiful, easy app makeup. Celebrity makeup artist, Trendee King says the fusion of deep hues with deep eyes and bright or light shades with a bold lip will create a fall makeup palette that takes you through the winter months. “The black and charcoal tones of French Roast are perfect for a deep, chocolate, smokey eye,” says King. “I love L’Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Shadow in Continuous Cocoa smudged all around the eyes.” Titanium is another color that works great on your eyes. “This chic neutral is perfectly paired with a bright violet to give your eyes that “wow” factor.” King suggests Laura Mercier Kohl eye pencil in Purple Sapphire. And, of course, the fall season calls for velvety smooth lips in profound colors such as burgundy and red. King recommends Tom Ford Lipstick in Black Orchid or Benefit’s silky finish lipstick in Frenched, a sheer, red stain.

Brrr, but not dead

The thermometer may show chilly digits, but we don’t have to sacrifice a fab fall mani for warmth. These grey fingerless mittens with purple heart from Etsy designer Pauliszka Knits will keep you hands cozy while at the same time show off your fall manicure. Color trends we are craving include BECCA CosmeticsPasa Doble Black Plum, Tempranillo Plum Red and Toasted Marshmallow Soft Brown Pink.
